Profilés de villes / Cities outlines : Roland Palmaerts

Ce stage avec Roland Palmaerts était centré sur l'apprentissage de la peinture des profilés de ville à l'aquarelle, plus particulèrement en hiver, sous la neige et l'éclairage de lumières tamisées. Toutes les aquarelles ont été peintes sans dessin préalable. Cette méthode permet à l'artiste d'analyser son sujet et de décider quels sont les éléments à mettre en valeur. De cette manière, le tableau n'est ni trop hermétique, ni trop contrôlé, et capture bien mieux l'essence du sujet, son atmosphère. Différents thèmes ont été étudiés en termes de couleur, composition, dynamisme, ambiance, ... ainsi que les techniques à mettre en oeuvre pour les représenter.

This training course with Roland Palmaerts was centered on the learning of how to paint cities outlines with watercolour, especially during the winter, with snow and subdued lights. All the watercolours are painted without any preliminary sketch. This method enables the artist to take a look at his subject and to decide which are the essential spots to focus on. This way, the painting is not too tight or controlled and better captures the essence of the subject, its atmosphere. Different themes were analyzed in terms of colour, composition, dynamism, atmosphere, ... as well as the techniques to use to depict them.

Etoile des Neiges
Voici le tableau terminé. Le paysage a été peint à l'aquarelle. Pour représenter le personnage, j'ai d'abord appliqué quelques lavis d'aquarelle et j'ai ensuite précisé les ombres et lumières au crayon de couleur. Les derniers détails ont été ajoutés à l'aquarelle en fin de travail.

And now, the completed work. The landscape was painted with watercolour. To depict the figure, I firstly applied some watercolour washes and then, I precised the lights and shadows using coloured pencils. The latest details were added with watercolour at the end of my work.

Turner Watercolours from The Courtauld
Je visiterai bientôt la Galerie Courtauld (Londres) pour y voir l'exposition "Sentiers vers la Célébrité : Aquarelles de Turner de la Courtauld", qui se déroule jusqu'au 25 janvier 2009. La Galerie Courtauld semble être le lieu approprié pour cette exposition : le jeune Joseph Mallord William Turner passa beaucoup de temps dans ce bâtiment, étudiant le dessin architectural alors qu'il était encore élève des Royal Academy Schools. La collection comprend quelques tableaux prêtés par la Tate Gallery ainsi que plusieurs pièces de la collection Courtauld.
L'exposition est divisée en 4 thèmes :
- Première Ambition indique l'intérêt du jeune Turner pour l'expérimentation,
- L'Attrait du Continent démontre la maîtrise de l'artiste pour un style plus artistique et imaginatif,
- Illustrations littéraires vers 1816 – 1832,
- Sable, Mer et Ciel ; Margate et Ruskin. Cette section décrit le rôle des collectionneurs et amis, dont le critique d'art John Ruskin, en tant que promoteurs des oeuvres de Turner. A cette époque, l'artiste se sentait davantage concerné par le temps, la lumière ou la couleur que par la précision.

I will soon visit the Courtauld Gallery (London) for the exhibition "Paths to Fame : Turner Watercolours from The Courtauld", running until January 25 2009. The Courtauld Gallery seems to be the appropriate setting for this exhibition : as a young man Joseph Mallord William Turner spent a lot of time in the building, studying architectural draughtsmanship as a student of the Royal Academy Schools. The collection includes loans from the Tate as well as pieces from The Courtauld’s own collection.
The exhibition is divided into four themes :
- Early Ambition indicates young Turner's interest for experimentation,
- The Lure of the Continent showcases Turner's mastery of a more artistic and imaginative style,
- Book Illustrations circa 1816 – 1832,
- Sand, Sea and Sky ; Margate and Ruskin. This section stresses the roles of collectors and friends, including art critic John Ruskin, as promoters of Turner's work. At that time, the artist was concerned with weather, light and colour rather than precision.
