Back to the Light (Watercolour Dance Series #1)
Back to the Light. Aquarelle / Watercolour. 46 x 36 cm (18,2" x 14,2"). 2010. Any (total or partial) reproduction of this picture is strictly forbidden.

This is the first achieved painting of my Watercolour Dance Series. I was interested in the human figure, of course, but also in some aspects of scenography and, consequently, chiaroscuro. Light, colours, objects, volumes and textures are full part of the work, so much so that the ballerina nearly comes at second sight.

A lot of beginners often think that a watercolour must be painted only with light colours to preserve its transparency. But, as far as I am concerned, I can't agree with this theory. With a little practice, it is easy to achieve transparent darks in watercolour, by the proportions of each pigment's families in the mix. Moreover, I simply have to study some examples in Art History to observe that great masters used the following principle : the darker is the background, the more the subject will pop in the painting, all media included. It is also interesting to notice that a dark background or high contrasts add more drama to the artwork.
