AUSTRALIA : Nicole Kidman, Baz Luhrmann, Hugh Jackman.
Une fois n'est pas coutume, je vais faire mention du Septième Art sur ce blog. L'art n'existe pas uniquement sous les formes conventionnelles (peinture, sculpture, ...), certains films constituent de véritables oeuvres d'art en eux-mêmes et le dernier opus de Baz Luhrmann, "Australia" en fait partie. Ce film épique est probablement le plus ambitieux jamais réalisé et tourné en Australie. Le titre tente de résumer l'histoire de Lady Ashley : son périple, le paysage qu'elle découvre ainsi que les personnes qu'elle rencontre, ... tous transformeront sa vie à jamais.
To bend the rules, I wish to mention the Seventh Art on this blog. Art doesn't only exists in its traditional forms (painting, sculpture, ...), some movies are also artworks on their own and Baz Luhrmann's last opus, untitled "Australia", is one of those. This epic film is probably the biggest movie ever to be made in Australia. The title is intended to sum up the story of Lady Ashley's life : her journey, the landscape she discovers and the people she meets, ... all of which transform her life forever.
Costumes : production designer Catherine Martin received an Academy Award nomination for her outstanding work in the field of Costume Design for Australia.
Le langage visuel est un élément primordial lorsque l'on souhaite porter une histoire sur grand écran. Aux côtés d'un bon scénario, d'une équipe de tournage et d'acteurs talentueux, la photographie et les costumes ont, eux aussi, un grand rôle à jouer. Ce film en lui-même, comme la plupart des autres oeuvres de B. Luhrmann, possède une belle qualité de vibrations qui captent instantanément le regard, développe de hauts contrastes complémentaires ainsi qu'une merveilleuse lumière. Les paysages australiens que l'on peut y voir ont été soigneusement choisis et utilisés de manière à amplifier et exprimer le côté dramatique du film. Par exemple, l'équipe a longtemps recherché le paysage adéquat pour la construction d'une grande propriété dans le style des années 1930, paysage qui se devait d'être à la fois magnifique mais désert afin d'appuyer les premières impressions de Lady Ashley à son arrivée en Australie ("Faraway Downs", voir ci-dessous).

The visual language is very important to tell a story on the big screen. Besides a good script and talented cast and crew members, photography and costumes do also have an great part to play. This movie itself, much like B. Luhrmann's other works, has a vibrant and eye-popping quality, develops high contrasts of complementary colours and beautiful light. Australian landscapes were carefully choosen and used to amplify and express drama in the film. For example, the crew looked for a landscape suitable for erecting a grand 1930’s style homestead and landscapes that looked beautiful but desolate to set the scene for Lady Ashley first impressions of this country ("Faraway Downs", pictures above).

Les vues de paysages à grande échelle prises sur place, en Australie, ont été parfaitement associées à des scènes plus intimistes afin de recréer cette atmosphère si particulière aux films de B. Luhrmann, où le spectateur est absorbé par le film et en devient l'un des acteurs.
The enormous scale of on-location shooting in Australia was perfectly combined with intimate filming to create this typical atmosphere in B. Luhrmann's film, where the viewer is absorbed in the movie and becomes part of it.

A Pin for the Butterfly
"A Pin for the Butterfly" (1994) is an independent movie written and directed by Hannah Kodichek. It stars a lot of talented British actors (Joan Plowright, Imogen Stubbs, Ian Bannen, Hugh Laurie, ...) and gathers a fine screenplay and a superb photography but, astonishingly, almost no one has seen or heard about it. Though, this beautiful film with wonderful acting shouldn't be neglected ...

Il réunit quelques-uns des acteurs britanniques les plus talentueux (Joan Plowright, Imogen Stubbs, Ian Bannen, Hugh Laurie, ...) ainsi qu'un excellent scénario et une superbe photographie mais, étonamment, presque personne ne semble l'avoir vu ou en avoir entendu parler. Néamoins, ce film magnifique, pourvu d'un merveilleux jeu d'acteurs, ne devrait pas être négligé ...
This complex political drama is set in the 50's, in Stalinist Czechoslovakia. The story is told much from the point of view of an imaginative young girl, Marushka, who lives with her grandparents and her uncle Vladimir, a lawyer. Her mother is an aspiring actress in the local socialist theater and she has left home to pursue an acting career. The little girl interprets familial and political events in her own way, blurring fact with imagination and fantasy. This is not appreciated by her grandparents who want her to become a talented ballerina or pianist, bounded by religious values and communist ideals. Her politically incorrect uncle seems to be the only one to care for her, just as she is. Vladimir doesn't embrace communist thinking but values independence and freedom. In a country where the mere mention of the West could result in prison, or worse, he dreams of America, refuses to take part in the government actions, and his convictions begin to threaten the whole family. Tracked by the authorities, Vladimir secretly plans to escape and get out of Czechoslovakia. But, unknown to all, Marushka is aware of it and is determined to go with him ...
Ce drame politique complexe se déroule dans les années 50, au coeur de la Tchécoslovaquie de Staline. L'histoire nous est contée selon le point de vue d'une petite fille à l'imagination débordante, Marushka, qui vit avec ses grand-parents et son oncle Vladimir, un avocat. Sa mère, une aspirante comédienne se produisant dans le théâtre socialiste local, a quitté la maison pour poursuivre une carrière d'actrice. La petite fille interprète les événements familiaux et politiques à sa façon, les déformant par son imagination et sa fantaisie. Ceci est loin d'être du goût de ses grand-parents qui souhaitent la voir devenir une ballerine ou une pianiste célèbre, respectueuse des valeurs religieuses et des idéaux communistes. Son oncle politiquement incorrect semble être le seul à l'aimer telle qu'elle est. Vladimir est loin de se conformer à la pensée communiste, lui qui attache une grande valeur aux notions d'indépendance et de liberté. Dans un pays où la plus petite mention de l'Ouest est passible de prison, ou pire encore, il rêve d'Amérique, refuse de prendre part aux actions du gouvernement, et ses convictions commencent à devenir une menace pour toute la famille. Traqué par les autorités, Vladimir élabore secrètement un plan qui lui permettra de fuir et de quitter la Tchécoslovaquie. Mais, à l'insu de tous, Marushka est au courant des intentions de son oncle et est déterminée à l'accompagner ...

La Ronde de Nuit / Nightwatching
Nightwatching is a 2007 film written and directed by Peter Greenaway (8 1/2 Women, ...). The movie is centered on the Dutch painter Rembrandt Van Rijn and the creation of his masterpiece "The Night Watch", and stars British actor Martin Freeman (Love Actually, The Office, ...) as the artist.
La Ronde de Nuit est un film écrit et réalisé par Peter Greenaway (8 Femmes 1/2 , ...) en 2007. Le film est centré sur le peintre néerlandais Rembrandt Van Rijn et sur la création de son célèbre tableau "La Ronde de Nuit". L'acteur britannique Martin Freeman (Love Actually, The Office, ...) y interprète le rôle de l'artiste.

Friends from Cambridge
From Left to right / De gauche à droite : Hugh Laurie, Rowan Atkinson, Tony Slattery, Stephen Fry, Penny Dwyer, Emma Thompson, Paul Shearer.
Some of them are part of the most talented British actors of all time ... They all met during their studies, in Cambridge. They were members of "Footlights Club", a theater group. Fry, Thompson and Laurie starred together in "Alfresco" (a weekly sketch show, 1982-1984) and in Kenneth Branagh's film, "Peter's Friends" (1992) .
Quelques-uns d'entre eux font partie des acteurs britaniques les plus talentueux de tous les temps ... Ils se sont rencontrés durant leurs études, à Cambridge, et étaient membres de la troupe de théâtre "Footlights Club". Fry, Thompson et Laurie ont partagé l'affiche dans "Alfresco" (un show hebdomadaire, 1982 - 1984) ainsi que dans le film de Kenneth Branagh, "Les Amis de Peter" (1992).
Do I really need to introduce you to the engaged and talented actress ("The Remains of the Day", "Much Ado About Nothing", "Primary Colours", "Wit", "Harry Potter", ...) and writer, ... Emma Thompson ? Maybe you don't know that she performed in the West End musical "Me and My Girl" (adapted by Stephen Fry) at the early beginning of her career ... That she wrote the screenplays of "Sense and Sensibility" (in which she also starred with Hugh Laurie, 1995) and "Nanny McPhee" (with Colin Firth, 2006) ... I had the pleasure to see her at the Dutch Premiere of "Nanny McPhee" in 2006 (Amsterdam) and she is just incredibly wonderful !
Est-il nécessaire de vous présenter l'actrice ("Les Vestiges du Jour", "Beaucoup de Bruit pour Rien", "Primary Colours", "Bel Esprit", "Harry Potter", ...) et scénariste talentueuse et engagée qu'est Emma Thompson ? Peut-être ne savez-vous pas qu'elle était à l'affiche de la comédie musicale du West End "Me and My Girl" (adaptée par Stephen Fry) au tout début de sa carrière ... Qu'elle est la scénariste de "Raison et Sentiments" (dans lequel elle jouait aux côtés de Hugh Laurie, 1995) et de "Nanny McPhee" (avec Colin Firth, 2006) ... J'ai eu le plaisir de la croiser à la Première néerlandaise de "Nanny McPhee" en 2006 (Amsterdam) et elle est tout simplement incroyablement merveilleuse !

He also wrote a first best-seller ("The Gun Seller") in 1996 and his next novel, "The Paper Seller", will be soon published. H. Atonement / Reviens-moi
"Atonement" is a highly-acclaimed novel by British writer Ian McEwan, regarded as one of the most celebrated and honoured books of recent years. Its author has won numerous awards in Eurpoe and United States. "Atonement" contains several references to a number of other classical literary works, including Henry James' "The Golden Bowl", Jane Austen's "Northanger Abbey", and Shakespeare's "The Tempest" and "Twelfth Night".
A film adaptation, directed by Joe Wright ("Pride & Prejudice", 2005) from a screenplay by Christopher Hampton ("Dangerous Liaisons", 1988) is released by Working Title Films today in Belgium. The movie stars Keira Knightley ("Pirates of the Caribbean", "Pride & Prejudice", ...) and James McAvoy ("Becoming Jane", "The Last King of Scotland", ...). As the opening film of the 2007 Venice International Film Festival, "Atonement" made Joe Wright at the age of 35 the youngest director ever to open this prestigious festival.
"Briony Tallis, 13 years old, an aspiring writer, and her adult sister Cecilia (Keira Knightley), are two of three children of an aristocratic English family. Robbie Turner (James McAvoy), about Cecilia's age, is a servant's son close to the family. Because of her vivid imagination, Briony misinterprets altercations and, later, embraces between her sister and Robbie as sexual agression. When a child of the Tallis family's friends is raped, Briony immediately accuses Robbie and the servant boy is arrested and jailed. During the Second World War, Robbie has to serve in the British Expeditionary Force. With only his mother and Cecilia protesting his innocence, Robbie is convicted and imprisoned, but granted parole on condition that he enlists. After the war, he is finally reunited with Cecilia, in London, where they renewed their love. Briony wishes to apologize to her sister and testifies about Robbie's innocence to the authorities." This is "Atonement", the latest successful novel written by Briony Tallis, this is her chance to give to Cecilia and Robbie the stolen hope and happiness that they deserved.

Voici "Atonement", le dernier roman à succès écrit par Briony Tallis, une ultime chance de donner à Cécilia et Robbie l'espoir et le bonheur volés qu'ils méritaient.

Miss Potter
Miss Potter is a Chris Noonan's film (2006) and tells the story of the famous children's author and illustrator, Beatrix Potter (London, 1866 - Near Sawrey, 1943). The movie combines stories from her own life with animated sequences featuring characters from her stories, such as Peter Rabbit.
The film stars Renée Zellweger (Bridget Jones Diary, ...) in the title role, Ewan McGregor (Moulin Rouge, ...) as her publisher and fiancé, Bill Paterson (Wives & Daughters, ...) as her father.
Miss Potter est un film de Chris Noonan (2006) qui raconte l'histoire de la célèbre auteure et illustratrice pour enfants, Béatrix Potter (Londres, 1866 - Near Sawrey, 1943). Les passages biographiques sont judicieusement combinés avec des séquences animées où l'on retrouve les personnages de ses contes, comme Pierre Lapin.

Beatrix Potter was also a talented watercolourist and this is why I was interested in this movie. The author and illustrator began to draw at a very early age. The painter Millais was a friend of the family and he gave her an insight into the world of artists. With her father, she often visited to the Royal Academy and developed her critical skills. She very much enjoyed the work of Gainsborough, Reynolds, Raphael and Titian. Alongside her famous books and illustrations, she did a lot sketches and paintings, ranging from animals to landscapes, flowers to fossils.
The basis of her many projects and stories were the small animals that she smuggled into the house or observed during family holidays in Scotland and the Lake District. She wanted to publish her story, "The Tale of Peter Rabbit", but she struggled to find a publisher until it was accepted in 1902, by Frederick Warne & Co. All her works became extremely popular and she was able to earn her own money. She also became secretly engaged to the publisher, Norman Warne, but her parents were set against her marrying a tradesman. They finally consent but Norman fell ill and died a few weeks before the wedding.

After Norman's death, Beatrix Potter purchased Hill Top Farm in the village of Sawrey, Cumbria, in the Lake District. With the incomes from the sales of her books, she bought pieces of land under the guidance of local solicitor William Heelis. In 1913, at the age of 47, she married William. She died at the age of 77.
Hill Top Farm, as well as the the 4000 acres of land bought by Beatrix, were bequeathed to The National Trust after her death. The farm is open to the public and receives thousands of visitors each year. In Bowness (Lake District), children can meet Peter Rabbit and friends at "The World Of Beatrix Potter Attraction".
Potter wrote 23 books and is the author of the best-loved children's stories of all time ...

Béatrix Potter était également une aquarelliste talentueuse et c'est l'une des raisons pour lesquelles je me suis intéressée à ce film. L'auteure et illustratrice commença à dessiner à un très jeune âge. Le peintre Millais était un ami de la famille et lui donna un aperçu du monde des artistes. Avec son père, l'enfant se rendait fréquemment à la Royal Academy et y développait ses aptitudes critiques. Elle appréciait énormément les oeuvres de Gainsborough, Reynolds, Raphaël et Titien. Lorsqu'ils finirent par accepter, Norman tomba malade et décéda quelques semaines avant la noce.
Après le décès de Norman, Béatrix Potter acheta Hill Top Farm dans le village de Sawrey, Cumbria, dans le Lake District. A partir des revenus issus de la vente de ses livres, elle acquit également de nombreuses parcelles de terre avec l'aide du notaire local, William Heelis. Robin Hood is a British television programme based on the adventures of the legendary hero Robin of Locksley. The first series started on 7th October 2006 on BBC One. Robin Hood was shot in Hungary, standing in for 12th century England. Production was based in the town of Fót, near Budapest.

Robin ne peut le tolérer, pas plus que Lady Marian ou les hors-la-loi qui vivent dans la forêt de Sherwood. Despite some anachronisms, the modern approach of the serie brings the right amount of change to make this medieval story accessible for a 21st century audience. At first sight, I thought that Jonas Armstrong was too young to portray Robin Hood. A 26 years old young men who belonged to King Richard's personal army, as a second in command, seemed unconvincing ... I must admit that I was wrong : his performance highlights Robin's intelligence, idealism and infallible bravery, maybe due to the rebellious character of his young age. The entire cast is quite well choosen, especially Sam Troughton (as Much) whose character often speaks without thinking first, getting himself and others into trouble.
Malgré quelques anachronismes, l'approche moderne de la série apporte le changement nécessaire pour rendre cette histoire médiévale davantage accessible à un public du 21è siècle. Ma première impression était que Jonas Armstrong était trop jeune pour interpréter Robin des Bois. Un jeune homme âgé d'à peine 26 ans ayant été membre de l'armée personnelle du Roi Richard, tel un second, me semblait peu convaincant ... Je dois admettre que j'avais tort : sa performance met en valeur l'intelligence de Robin, son idéalisme et son courage infaillible, sans doute dus au caractère rebelle son jeune âge. L'ensemble du casting est vraiment bien choisi, particulièrement Sam Troughton (qui interprète Much) dont le personnage parle souvent avant de tourner sept fois sa langue dans sa bouche, ce qui finit toujours par poser problème pour lui-même et ses compagnons.
But, to me, the two villains steal the show ! Richard Armitage’s Guy of Gisborne is really convincing - he is both capable of tremendous cruelty and surprising by his desire for redemption - and Keith Allen’s gags as the mocking, heavily sarcastic Sheriff, are simply excellent.
Mais, à mon sens, les deux vilains sont le clou du spectacle ! Le Guy of Gisborne de Richard Armitage est réellement convaincant - oscillant constamment entre une terrible cruauté et un espoir de rédemption - et les gags de Keith Allen, interprétant le moqueur et sarcastique Shérif, sont simplement excellents.

The Prestige
"The Prestige" is a 2006 film directed by Christopher Nolan ("Following", "Memento", "Batman Begins"), with a screenplay adapted from the 1995 epistolary novel of the same name, written by Christopher Priest. The film features Christian Bale as Alfred Borden, Hugh Jackman as Robert Angier, and David Bowie as Nikola Tesla. It also stars Michael Caine, Scarlett Johansson and Andy Serkis. Along with "The Illusionist" and "Scoop", "The Prestige" was one of three films in 2006 to explore the world of stage magicians.
The film is thematically faithful to the novel (indeed, the themes of duality, obsession, sacrifice, and secrecy are omnipresent). And the Victorian modernist aesthetic of the movie is absolutely wonderful. Even if the choosen filming locations are situated in the United States, the film perfectly depicts the fin de siècle London and its atmosphere.

Le film est fidèle aux thèmes abordés tout au long du roman (en effet, la dualité, l'obsession, le sacrifice et le secret y sont ominprésents). Et, la cerise sur le gâteau, l'esthétique moderniste victorienne du film est absolument merveilleuse. Même si les lieux de tournage choisis se trouvent aux Etats-Unis, le film décrit parfaitement le Londres de la fin du 19è siècle et son atmosphère.
The film is split into three storylines, each resembling one of the three stages of magic. First, there is the setup, or the "pledge", where the magician shows the audience something that appears ordinary but is probably not, making use of misdirection. Then there is the performance, or the "turn," where the magician makes the ordinary act extraordinary. Lastly, there is the "prestige", where the effect of the illusion is produced.
Le film est divisé en trois lignes directrices, chacune se rapportant à l'une des trois étapes que comporte un tour de magie, comme cela est expliqué dans le film. La première étape se nomme la "promesse", où le magicien présente au public quelque chose qui semble ordinaire, mais ne l'est probablement pas, en utilisant des diversions. La seconde étape consiste en l'exécution, le "tour", où le magicien rend l'acte ordinaire extraordinaire. Enfin, le "prestige", est l'étape finale de l'illusion, lorsque l'imprévu se produit.
Two young, passionate magicians, Robert Angier, a charismatic showman, and Alfred Borden, a gifted illusionist, are ringers for Milton the Magician, with Cutter as his illusion engineer. Robert and Alfred are friends and partners until one fateful night when their biggest trick goes terribly wrong : Angier's wife, Julia, drowns while performing a predicament escape from a water torture cell, and Angier suspects that Borden bound her wrists with a knot that was harder for her to undo than his customary one. Angier vows to take his revenge for the lost of his wife, caused by Borden.
Deux jeunes magiciens passionnés, Robert Angier, un homme de scène charismatique, et Alfred Borden, un illusionniste doué, sont les assistants de Milton le Magicien, aux côtés de Cutter, l'ingénieur illusionniste. Robert et Alfred sont amis et partenaires jusqu'à la nuit tragique où leur plus grand tour de magie tourne mal : l'épouse d'Angier, Julia, se noie au cours du célèbre tour d'évasion d'un aquarium et Angier suspecte Borden d'avoir lié les poignets de son épouse avec un noeud plus difficile à défaire pour elle que de coutume. Angier fait le voeu de venger la mort de sa femme, causée par Borden.
Now the bitterest of ennemies, they will stop at nothing to learn each other's secrets. Angier performs as "The Great Danton," with Cutter's assistance, and he employs Olivia as his assistant. Borden, known as "The Professor" hires Fallon as his engineer. Borden soon astonishes crowds with "The Transported Man," in which he bounces a ball across the stage before stepping into a box and instantly reappearing from a second box on the opposite side of the stage to catch the ball.
A présent devenus les pires ennemis, ils ne reculent devant rien pour découvrir les secrets de l'autre. Angier exerce sous le nom du "Grand Danton", avec l'aide de Cutter, et il emploie Olivia comme assitante. Borden, ayant adopté "Le Professeur" comme nom de scène, engage Fallon comme ingénieur. Borden stupéfait bientôt les foules avec "L'Homme Transporté", une illusion au cours de laquelle il lance une balle d'un côté de la scène avant de passer une porte et de réapparaître instantanément par une seconde porte, disposée à l'extrémité opposée, pour attrapper la balle.
Baffled by Borden's act, Angier travels to Colorado Springs in order to meet Nikola Tesla and learn the secret of such an illusion. Tesla constructs a teleportation machine that creates and teleports a duplicate of any item placed in it. Now, Angier has his great illusion too ... As their rivalry escalates into a total obsession, full of deceit and sabotage, the two illusionists risk everything to become the greatest magician of all time.
Déconcerté par le tour de Borden, Angier se rend à la rencontre de Nikola Tesla, à Colorado Springs, afin d'apprendre le secret d'une telle illusion. Tesla construit une machine de téléportation qui crée et téléporte un clone de tout élément qui y est placé. A présent, Angier possède lui aussi sa grande illusion ... Alors que leur rivalité se transforme en une totale obsession, pleine de duplicité et de sabotage, ils mettent en péril tout ce qui leur est le plus cher afin de devenir le plus grand magicien de tous les temps.

Books : Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell (Susanna Clarke)
"Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell" is the first novel written by Susanna Clarke. It was originally published in 2004, in the United Kingdom, and has since been translated in 17 countries. This book tells the story of two feuding magicians who attempt to restore English magic in the age of Napoleon and combines the dark mythological fantasy of J.R.R. Tolkien with the social comedy of Jane Austen.
Centuries ago, when magic still existed in England, the greatest magician of them all was the Raven King. A human child brought up by fairies, the Raven King blended fairy wisdom and human reason to create English magic. Now, at the beginning of the nineteenth century, he is barely more than a legend, and England, with its mad King and the ravages of the Napoleonic Wars, no longer believes in practical magic.
Then the reclusive Mr Norrell of Hurtfew Abbey appears and causes the statues of York Cathedral to speak and move. News spreads of the return of magic to England and, persuaded that he must help the government in the war against Napoleon, Mr Norrell goes to London. There he meets a brilliant young magician and takes him as a pupil. Jonathan Strange is charming, rich and arrogant. Together, they dazzle the country with their feats.
But the partnership soon turns to rivalry. Mr Norrell has never conquered his lifelong habits of secrecy, while Strange will always be attracted to the wildest, most perilous magic. He becomes fascinated by the shadowy figure of the Raven King, and his heedless pursuit of long-forgotten magic threatens, not only his partnership with Norrell, but everything that he holds dear.
In March 2005, New Line Cinema has hired Oscar-winning screenwriter Christopher Hampton ("Dangerous Liaisons", with Glenn Close, John Malkovitch and Michelle Pfeiffer, 1988.) to adapt the novel for the big screen.

Ce livre raconte l'histoire de deux magiciens rivaux qui tentent de restaurer la magie anglaise durant l'ère napoléonienne et combine judicieusement la mythologie noire fantastique de J.R.R. Il y a des siècles de cela, lorsque la magie existait encore en Angleterre, le plus grand magicien de tous était le Roi Corbeau. Enfant humain elevé par des fées, le Roi Corbeau mêla sagesse féérique et raison humaine et créa la magie anglaise. Aujourd'hui, au début du dix-neuvième siècle, il n'est plus guère qu'une légende et l'Angleterre, gouvernée par un roi fou et ravagée par les guerres napoléoniennes, ne croit plus à la pratique de la magie.
Or voici qu'apparaît Mr Norrell, le reclus de l’abbaye de Hurtfew, qui prête parole et mouvement aux statues de la cathédrale d'York. La nouvelle du retour de la magie en Angleterre se répand comme une traînée de poudre et, persuadé qu'il peut aider le gouvernement à vaincre Napoléon, Mr Norrell se rend à Londres. Il y rencontre un jeune magicien brillant et le prend comme élève. Jonathan Strange est charmant, riche et arrogant. Ensemble, ils éblouissent le pays de leurs exploits.
Mais leur association tourne vite à la rivalité. Mr Norrell n'a jamais renoncé à son goût du mystère de toute une vie, alors que Strange sera toujours attiré par la magie la plus folle et la plus périlleuse. Il se laisse donc fasciner par la figure ténébreuse du Roi Corbeau, et sa poursuite étourdie d'une magie depuis longtemps oubliée menace non seulement son association avec Mr Norrell mais aussi tout ce qui lui est cher.

Theatre : Twelfth Night / La Nuit des Rois
"Twelfth Night ... or What You Will", Trevor Nunn's adaptation of William Shakespeare's classic comedy, is the story of identical twins, Viola and Sebastian. They have each other for only family and, after a storm, brother and sister are shipwrecked off the coast of Illyria, both believing the other is dead. Viola quickly understands that she will have to find how to survive in this alien country, which is at war with her own. She learns that the land is inhabited by a young countess, Olivia, who has also recently lost her beloved father and brother. To keep the spirit of her brother and father alive, Olivia has sworn to have no contact with men for seven years, and especially with the Duke Orsino, who is deeply in love with her.
Viola decides to dress as her brother ans masquerades as a young servant, under the name of "Cesario". She enters the service of Duke Orsino and becomes his confidant. Orsino decides to use "Cesario" as an intermediary in order to declare his love to the beautiful countess. Olivia, believing Viola to be a man and still unmoved by the Duke's attentions, falls in love with the handsome and eloquent young messenger. Viola, in turn, has fallen in love with the Duke, who also believes Viola is a man and who only regards her as a close friend.
When Sebastian arrives on the scene, he is mistaken for his sister and so the misunderstandings begin ...
"La Nuit des Rois ... ou Ce Qu'il Vous Plaira", l'adaptation au cinéma de la comédie classique de William Shakespeare par Trevor Nunn, est l'histoire de jumeaux identiques, Viola et Sebastian. Chacun ne possède que l'autre pour seule famille et, après une tempête, frère et soeur sont naufragés et échouent à différents lieux sur la côte d'Illyria, chacun croyant que l'autre est mort noyé. Viola comprend rapidement qu'elle devra trouver comment survivre dans ce pays ennemi, en guerre avec le sien. Elle apprend que les terres sur lesquelles elle se trouve sont habitées par une jeune comtesse, Olivia, qui a, elle aussi, récemment perdu son père et son frère. Afin d'honorer leur mémoire, Olivia a juré de n'avoir de contact avec aucun homme durant sept ans, et plus particulièrement avec le Duc Orsino qui est profondément épris d'elle.
Viola décide de se vêtir comme son frère et prétend être un jeune serviteur du nom de "Cesario". Elle entre au service du Duc Orsino et devient son confident. Orsino décide d'utiliser "Cesario" comme intermédiaire afin de déclarer son amour à la belle comtesse. Olivia, croyant que Viola est un homme et toujours insensible aux attentions du Duc, tombe amoureuse du beau et éloquent jeune messager. Viola, quant à elle, est éprise du Duc, lequel est également convaincu qu'elle est un homme et ne la considère que comme un ami proche.
Lorsque Sebastian entre en scène, il est confondu avec sa soeur et les quiproquos ne font que commencer ...
