Ambiance Nuit / Night Atmosphere : Roland Palmaerts

Les 2 et 3 mai derniers, j'ai participé au stage de Roland Palmaerts : Ambiances nocturnes et passages du clair-obscur. Le clair-obscur est un terme artistique qui désigne le contraste entre l'ombre et la lumière. Il décrit généralement les contrastes audacieux qui peuvent affecter toute une composition mais est également utilisé par des artistes pour dépeindre des effets lumineux, allant de la valeur la plus claire à la plus sombre, afin de créer une illusion de profondeur et/ou d'objets tri-dimensionnels. Ce procédé a été mis au point dès la Renaissance mais fut porté à son apogée par Le Caravage et ses suiveurs, puis par des peintres des écoles du nord, notamment Rembrandt ou William Turner.
On 2nd and 3rd May, I attended to Roland Palmaerts's workshop : Night atmospheres and Chiaroscuro (Italian for light-dark). Chiaroscuro is a term in art for a contrast between light and dark. The term is usually applied to bold contrasts affecting a whole composition, but is also more technically used by artists to create a gradual gradation from light to dark values in order to give the illusion of depth and/or three-dimensional objects. This technique was concieved during the Renaissance but reached its apogee thanks to The Caravagge and his followers, then by painters from Northern schools, as Rembrandt or William Turner.

Roland Palmaerts nous a montré comment transposer, à l'aquarelle, cette technique principalement utilisée en peinture à l'huile. En effet, une multitude d'effets lumineux peuvent être créés selon le choix des couleurs et des types de pigment, de leur conditionnement, de la prise et de la pose de ces mêmes couleurs en fonction du degré d'humidité du papier et de la quantité d'eau présente dans l'outil.
Roland Palmaerts showed us how to transpose this technique, mainly used in oil painting, to watercolour. Indeed, a multitude of light effects can be created according to the choice of colours and types of pigment, the choice of their packaging, the way the artist take and lay down colour depending on the stage of paper wetness and the amount of water in the brush.

Les deux aquarelles présentées ci-dessus ont été réalisées durant le stage, en un seul temps de séchage. Cela implique une bonne connaissance des différents stades de l'humidité du papier, un bon dosage de l'eau et de la couleur, de manière à obtenir les bons effets au bon moment.
Both watercolours shown above were painted during the workshop, in one step only. This implies a good knowledge of the different stages of paper wetness, a good proportioning of water and colour, in order to obtain the right effects at the right time.

Tutti Coloria ... Sous la Neige / & Snow
Notre seconde session de cours d'aquarelle a commencé lundi dernier. Intitulée "Tutti Coloria", celle-ci est centrée sur la couleur et la technique du négatif. Le premier exercice consistait à représenter un paysage à la fonte des neiges. Comme vous pouvez le voir sur la photo ci-dessous, la forme triangulaire de la neige est définie en peignant tout autour de celle-ci. Quelques effets de texture sont ajoutés à l'avant-plan en effectuant des soustractions de couleur dans la peinture fraîche avec un cutter (Lire les différents usages du cutter à l'aquarelle). L'avant-plan dense et sombre, à gauche, contraste avec la douceur du ciel et des arbres. Chaque arbre est peint en positif, avec plusieurs couleurs issues des différentes familles de pigments : teintures, minérales et sédimentaires.

Our second session of watercolour lessons began last Monday. This one, named "Tutti Coloria", is centered on colour and negative painting. The first exercise consisted in depicting a landscape when the snow melts. As you can see on the picture above, the triangular shape of the snow is defined by painting around it. Some textural effects are added to the foreground by scraping out colour from wet paint with a Stanley knife (Learn more about Stanley knife and watercolour). The dense and dark foreground, on the left, contrasts with the softness of the sky and trees. Each tree is painted in positive, with several colours from different families of paints : staining, mineral and sedimentary pigments.

Profilés de villes / Cities outlines : Roland Palmaerts

Ce stage avec Roland Palmaerts était centré sur l'apprentissage de la peinture des profilés de ville à l'aquarelle, plus particulèrement en hiver, sous la neige et l'éclairage de lumières tamisées. Toutes les aquarelles ont été peintes sans dessin préalable. Cette méthode permet à l'artiste d'analyser son sujet et de décider quels sont les éléments à mettre en valeur. De cette manière, le tableau n'est ni trop hermétique, ni trop contrôlé, et capture bien mieux l'essence du sujet, son atmosphère. Différents thèmes ont été étudiés en termes de couleur, composition, dynamisme, ambiance, ... ainsi que les techniques à mettre en oeuvre pour les représenter.

This training course with Roland Palmaerts was centered on the learning of how to paint cities outlines with watercolour, especially during the winter, with snow and subdued lights. All the watercolours are painted without any preliminary sketch. This method enables the artist to take a look at his subject and to decide which are the essential spots to focus on. This way, the painting is not too tight or controlled and better captures the essence of the subject, its atmosphere. Different themes were analyzed in terms of colour, composition, dynamism, atmosphere, ... as well as the techniques to use to depict them.

Un Soir à Venise / An Evening in Venice
Le cours du 17 novembre était consacré à l'étude de la perspective et des blancs sculptés (ou technique du négatif). La ligne d'horizon est la clé de la perspective. Elle dénote la limite de ce qui peut être observé au niveau du sol et indique la hauteur à laquelle se trouve le spectateur par rapport à son environnement (hauteur des yeux). Plus les objets se trouvent loin du spectateur, plus ils paraissent petits. Les lignes parallèles, horizontales et droites peuvent se rencontrer et disparaître en un point situé sur la ligne d'horizon, simplement appelé le point de fuite. La technique du négatif consiste à peindre autour d'un objet pour en définir la forme, dans le cas qui nous occupe, la scène centrale.

On 17th November, the watercolour lesson was about perspective and sculpted whites (or negative painting). The horizon is the key to perspective. It denotes the limit of what you can see at ground level and it indicates the viewer's height in relation to his environment. As objects become further away from the viewer, they appear smaller. Lines that are parallel, horizontal and straight will eventually meet and vanish at a point on the horizon, this is simply named the vanishing point. The negative painting means painting around a subject to define its shape, in this case, the central scene.

Aquarelle et monotype / Monotype and watercolour
Durant notre dernier cours, j'ai appris comment combiner la technique du monotype avec l'aquarelle. Le monotype est un procédé d'impression qui consiste à dessiner ou peindre sur une surface lisse et non-absorbante. La couleur est d'abord appliquée sur une plaque de plexiglass ou sur un acétate. Ensuite, le papier aquarelle humidifié est recouvert de cette plaque, l'artiste presse celle-ci fermement et l'ôte après quelques minutes. Le sujet est transféré sur le papier. Enfin, l'arrière-plan et quelques détails sont ajoutés à l'aide de pinceaux chargés de couleur. Cette aquarelle a été exécutée spontanément, sans dessin préalable.

During our latest watercolour class, I learned how to combine the monotype technique with watercolour. Monotyping is a type of printmaking made by drawing or painting on a smooth, non-absorbent surface. Firstly, the colour is applied on an acrylic glass or on an acetate. Then, the moist watercolour paper is covered with the glass, the artist presses it down firmly and peels it off after a few minutes. The shape is transferred on the paper. Finally, the background and some details are added with brushes loaded of colour. This work was spontaneously executed and with no previous sketch.

Cutter et aquarelle / Stanley knife and watercolour
Voici le paysage réalisé durant le cours d'aquarelle de lundi dernier. Comme nous l'avons déjà souligné dans "Les Carnets de l'Aquarelliste", le cutter est un bon outil pour enlever de la couleur dans la peinture fraîche ou pour ouvrir des blancs en grattant la couleur sèche. Dans ce tableau, l'innovation réside en un autre usage original du cutter : l'artiste l'utilise pour prélever de la couleur et peindre directement sur le papier, comme avec un pinceau.

Here is the landscape that I painted on last Monday, during my watercolour lesson. As we said earlier in "The Watercolourist's notes", the Stanley knife is a good tool for scraping out colour from wet paint or scratching out colour on dry paint. For this painting, the innovation resides in another original use of the Stanley knife : the artist uses it to take colour from the palette and to paint directly on the paper, like a brush.

"Duo d'Eau", Exposition Feller & Palmaerts Exhibition
Roland Palmaerts et Odette Feller présentent leurs dernières oeuvres (aquarelles et acryliques) à Bruxelles, durant cinq jours seulement ! Cette exposition se déroule du 17 au 21 octobre, de 13 heures à 20 heures (Château du Karreveld, avenue Jean de la Hoese, 1080 Molenbeek-Saint-Jean, Belgique).
Une démonstration d'aquarelle par Roland Palmaerts est programmée le samedi 18 octobre, de 15 à 18 heures (prix d'entrée : 10 euros). Pour plus d'informations : (+32) 02 468 56 06.

Ciel et rochers / Sky and rocks
Je suis actuellement des cours dispensés par Roland Palmaerts, avec qui j'avais déjà effectué un stage d'aquarelle en extérieur en juillet de cette année. Voici l'aquarelle réalisée ce lundi, en technique humide pour le ciel et son reflet dans l'eau. Les rochers ont été ajoutés par la suite et sculptés au cutter.

I am currently following Roland Palmaerts training courses. I attended to his watercolour lessons in July this year, studying the work outdoors. Here is the watercolour that I painted on Monday, using the wet-on-wet technique for the sky and its reflection on the water. The rocks were added later and sculpted with an utility knife.

Stage avec / Training course with ... Roland Palmaerts
Roland Palmaerts est né à Bruxelles en 1953. Il a étudié les Beaux-Arts à l'Académie Royale des Arts de Bruxelles, où il a remporté le Premier Prix de dessin aquarellé. Roland est membre de la Société Canadienne d'Aquarelle (S.C.A.), de l'Institut Européen de l'Aquarelle (I.E.A.) et a été le Président de l'Institut des Arts Figuratifs durant cinq ans. Roland Palmaerts was born in 1953, in Brussels. He studied Fine Arts in the Royal Academy of Arts in Brussels, where he won the Frist Prize of watercoloured drawing. Roland is a member of the Canadian Watercolour Society (C.S.A.), the European Watercolour Institute (I.E.A.) and was the President of the Figurative Arts Institute (I.A.F.) during five years. Ce stage s'est déroulé le 30 juillet à Namur, en bords de Meuse. Au programme : l'étude du travail en extérieur, de la texture des rochers, des contrastes, des reflets de l'eau et un bref aperçu de la pochade, le tout accompagné de nombreuses notions sur la couleur, la dynamique du paysage, ... et de nombreux conseils et démonstrations par Roland.
This training course took place on 30th July, in Namur (on the Meuse's banks). On the programme : the study of the work outdoors, the texture of the rocks, the contrasts, the water reflections and an quick overview of the "pochade" technique. All of this was broached with notions about colour, dynamic of landscape, ... as well as some advice and demonstrations by Roland.
