But he is not the only powerful man to be awed by the young soprano ... The Vicomte de Chagny, the theatre's patron, also falls in love with her ...
Probably the biggest independent movie ever made, this adaptation is inspired from Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical and from the novel written by Gaston Leroux in 1910. About ten film versions have already been made but people still remember Sarah Brightman and Steve Harley / Michael Crowford singing "The Music Of The Night" in Webber's adaptation, which is now the longest running Broadway show in history.

Directed by Joel Schumacher and produced by Andrew Lloyd Webber, this film was a long and difficult challenge for each member of the cast and crew. It was impossible to film on location. So, a scale model of the Opera Garnier was used for the special effects of the movie and the interiors of the place were entirely built in Pinewood Studios (United Kingdom) : auditorium, stage, backstage areas, workshops and stables, dressing rooms, dormitories and even the lake under the Opera House. The set design took more than 40 weeks. Anthony Pratt, the Production Designer, researched the work of the painters from the Phantom period, such as John Singer Sargent, Gustave Caillebotte and Edgar Degas, and transformed the Paris Opera House in a more romantic and larger place than the original building, in order to accentuate the story's gothic romance.

The visual effects (made by ASYLUM) are absolutely stunning, especially the transition between the old look of the opera (in 1919) and its new one (as Christine knew it). To do this, Asylum worked from different sequences : layers of old statues covered with dust and cobwebs, passages of light, beauty look of intact architectural elements, 3-dimensional simulations, ... were combined together.
