Technique du Négatif / Negative Painting

J'ai déjà abordé la notion de peinture en négatif dans quelques articles ("Un Soir à Venise", "La Joueuse de Harpe 4/5"). La technique du négatif (ou des blancs sculptés) signifie qu'au lieu de peindre l'objet lui-même, le peintre en définit la forme en peignant autour de celui-ci. Ce procédé n'est pas neuf et était déjà employé par de célèbres aquarellistes comme, par exemple, John Singer Sargent.

I already brought up the notion of negative painting in a few articles ("An Evening in Venice", "The Harp Player 4/5"). Negative painting (or sculpted whites) means that rather than painting the object itself, the painter creates its shape by painting around the object. This process is not new and was already used by famous watercolour painters, as f.g. John Singer Sargent.

La majorité des peintres travaillent en positif, ce qui signifie ajouter une forme par dessus une autre. La technique du négatif est une méthode de travail alternative qui permet à l'artiste d'obtenir un tableau plus précis (en se focalisant sur les formes en négatif, il peut simplifier un sujet difficile), d'améliorer sa composition et de produire des oeuvres de manière créative et originale sans recopier le sujet. Cette approche peut être utilisée avec une variété de médiums : aquarelle, acrylique, huile et techniques mixtes.

Les techniques en positif et négatif peuvent être combinées pour offrir davantage de choix et de possibilités. En effet, les formes positives et négatives peuvent être associées pour créer de la profondeur et délimiter les contours du sujet, ce qui accentuera l'aspect réaliste du tableau. Le procédé de travail est amusant et simple : laissez blanc le motif central et peignez tout autour de celui-ci pour simplement colorer ou au contraire mettre l'accent sur ce qui l'entoure.

Most painters work using the positive painting, which means to add one shape on top of another. The negative technique is an alternative way of working that allows the artist to end up with a more accurate painting (by focusing on the negative shapes, he can simplify a difficult subject), to improve his composition and to  produce creative and original artworks instead of recreate the subject. This approach can be used with a variety of mediums : watercolour, acrylic, oil and mixed media.

The positive and negative techniques can be combined to offer more choices and possibilities. Indeed, the positive and negative shapes can be used  together to create depth and contour. This will improve the realistic look of the painting. The painting process is fun and simple : leave blank the central motif and paint all around it to simply colour or, on the contrary, emphasize the surroundings.
