Looking at Staithes
Staithes derives its name from the word staithe, the literal interpretation of which is "landing place".
Because of its natural beauty and spectacular scenery, Staithes became a popular haunt of artists during the late 19th century. A resident community was established in the village and became known as the "Staithes Group". Although the community of artists has long since disbanded, Staithes is still as popular and as you explore the area you may often find artists at work.
I visited Staithes a few years ago, while I was travelling across Yorkshire and the Humber. This small North Yorkshire fishing village gives the appearance of having grown out of the cliffs. The village of Cowbar is located nearby and offers this beautiful view.
