Dance Series n°3 : croquis / sketch
Voici le troisième croquis de ma prochaine série d'aquarelles, celle-ci aura pour thème la Danse. L'un des nombreux avantages du dessin préléminaire est que celui-ci permet à l'artiste, outre le seul dessin, de modifier ou réorganiser les lignes et détails à l'infini jusqu'à produire une esquisse satisfaisante. Il s'avère également utile de tenir un journal retraçant la progression de chaque esquisse, de manière à pouvoir utiliser et combiner les différents tracés. Ce procédé offre également à l'artiste la possibilité de développer une idée précise, d'étudier son sujet avant de peindre directement (sans dessin préalable) et, de ce fait, de travailler avec davantage de spontanéité une fois le pinceau en main.

This is the third sketch of my forthcoming watercolour "Dance" series. One of the many advantages of the preliminary drawing is that more than only drawing, the artist can also change and rearrange lines and details, over and over again until he has produced a satisfactory preliminary sketch. It is also useful to keep a record of each sketch progression in order to use and combine separate numbered tracings. This process also enables the artist to develop a precise idea, to study his subject before painting directly (without any drawing) and, so, to work with more spontaneity once holding a brush in the hand.

Dance Series n°2 : croquis / sketch
Voici le second dessin de ma série "Danse". J'ai étudié de nombreuses poses différentes avant de choisir de représenter celle-ci. Il me faut encore dessiner l'environnement des personnages, définir la perspective et ajouter quelques éléments plus abstraits afin d'obtenir une composition harmonieuse à la fois de temes de forme, dynamisme et contraste.

Here is the second drawing of my "Dance Series". I studied a lot of different poses before choosing to depict this one. I still have to draw the environment around the figures, define the perspective and add some abstracts elements in order to obtain a harmonious composition in terms of shape, dynamism and contrast.

Dance Series n°1 : croquis / sketch
Voici mon dernier dessin, un croquis détaillé destiné à la réalisation du premier tableau de ma prochaine série "Danse" à l'aquarelle. Je m'intéresse à l'étude des danseurs en mouvement, à la manière dont leur grâce naturelle et leurs pas contribuent à créer une atmosphère des plus magiques. Les costumes et le décor jouent également un rôle important pour chaque composition. Ici, les lignes de la perspective circulaire renforce, par opposition, les courbes du corps de la danseuse et ajoutent davantage de dynamisme au dessin.
J'ai déjà peint quelques ballerines au pastel ("Le Cygne", "Ballet 21", ...) mais il me semble que la transparence de l'aquarelle viendra rehausser plus encore l'impression de légèreté et de grâce qui contraste automatiquement avec la rigueur de cette discipline.

Here is my latest drawing, a detailed sketch for the first piece of my future "Dance Series" in watercolour. I am interested in studying dancers in motion, how their natural grace and their steps contribute to create some kind of magic atmosphere. Of course, costumes and set do also have an important part to play in each composition. Here, the lines of the circular perspective emphazises, in contrast, the dancer's body curve and add more dynamism to the drawing.
I already have painted ballerinas in pastel ("The Swan", "Ballet 21", ...) but it seems to me that watercolour's transparency will better enhance the impression of lightness and grace that automatically contrasts with the rigour of this discipline.

La Belle Oubliée : croquis / sketch
Voici le croquis de ma dernière aquarelle, intitulée "La Belle Oubliée". Il s'agit de la figure de proue de l'épave d'un navire, dont vous n'apercevrez la coque qu'en plongée. Ceci est un dessin préléminaire, j'en modifierai sans doute quelques éléments, comme par exemple le drapé de la robe, en fonction de la manière dont l'eau et les pigments interagiront ensemble au cours de la pose couleur.

Here is the sketch of my latest watercolour, untitled "La Belle Oubliée". It depicts the figurehead of a shipwreck, from which you will only see the hull from above. This is a preliminary drawing, I will modify some elements, as f.g. the dress, depending on how water and watercolour pigments will interact one with each other during the painting process.

Aquarelle et monotype / Monotype and watercolour
Durant notre dernier cours, j'ai appris comment combiner la technique du monotype avec l'aquarelle. Le monotype est un procédé d'impression qui consiste à dessiner ou peindre sur une surface lisse et non-absorbante. La couleur est d'abord appliquée sur une plaque de plexiglass ou sur un acétate. Ensuite, le papier aquarelle humidifié est recouvert de cette plaque, l'artiste presse celle-ci fermement et l'ôte après quelques minutes. Le sujet est transféré sur le papier. Enfin, l'arrière-plan et quelques détails sont ajoutés à l'aide de pinceaux chargés de couleur. Cette aquarelle a été exécutée spontanément, sans dessin préalable.

During our latest watercolour class, I learned how to combine the monotype technique with watercolour. Monotyping is a type of printmaking made by drawing or painting on a smooth, non-absorbent surface. Firstly, the colour is applied on an acrylic glass or on an acetate. Then, the moist watercolour paper is covered with the glass, the artist presses it down firmly and peels it off after a few minutes. The shape is transferred on the paper. Finally, the background and some details are added with brushes loaded of colour. This work was spontaneously executed and with no previous sketch.

Voici le second personnage de ma prochaine aquarelle intitulée "La Joueuse de Harpe". Il s'agit non pas d'un être humain mais d'une statue, le socle doit encore être dessiné.
